When it comes to the pickup truck market, most vehicle enthusiasts are aware that there are multiple sizes of pickup trucks to choose from. You've got the enormous heavy-duty trucks, you've got the big and powerful half-ton pickup trucks, and you've got the more manageable midsize pickup trucks. Midsize pickup trucks are great for those who want to save money while still enjoying some of the perks that come with owning a truck. However, with so many midsize pickup trucks on the market today, it can be difficult to know which one is the best. That's why today we're comparing the 2022 Nissan Frontier vs 2022 Toyota Tacoma.

Which midsize pickup truck is the best? Both the Nissan Frontier and the Toyota Tacoma are fantastic options, but only one can come out on top. What does top mean, exactly? Well, that depends on what it is exactly that you are looking for. Each of these midsize pickup trucks has its own pros and cons. But if you're looking for a truck that can really tote around a lot of weight, put a ton of power behind the engine, and take you on the adventure of a lifetime, one of these trucks is going to serve you better than the other. The only question is now, which one will that be?

  • Payload

As with any good pickup truck, one of the most brag-worthy aspects of the 2022 Nissan Frontier is its payload capacity. But anybody can say their truck's payload is good, so in order to truly see how good the Frontier is, we need to compare it to a comparable truck, such as the 2022 Toyota Tacoma. So how do the 2022 Nissan Frontier and the 2022 Toyota Tacoma hold up in terms of payload capacity?

    Get Ready to Haul

The 2022 Nissan Frontier has the ability to haul up to 1,610 lbs of cargo in the bed of the pickup truck, whereas the 2022 Toyota Tacoma has a max of 1,685 lbs worth of payload capacity. However, to get that max figure for the Tacoma, you will have to opt for the rather underpowered four-cylinder engine. If you choose the V6, the Toyota will top out at 1,525 lbs. Honestly, they are both good and highly comparable. Each of these trucks would do all the work of a powerful midsize truck. However, there's no question that the Frontier can do more.

When it comes to pickup trucks, even midsize trucks are chosen over cars because they have beds that allow you to haul more than a trunk of any car could even dream of. This is fabulous if you have to carry around furniture or work-related items. And if you're an adventurous person who packs up your toys and gear in the truck bed before heading out to have some fun, payload capacity is going to matter to you too. Payload capacity is important to every truck owner whether they spend the majority of their time at work or at play.

    Off-Road Hauling

Now not everyone uses a midsize truck as a work vehicle - some would rather go with the off-road package in order to enjoy some backwoods adventures such as wheeling and overlanding. Both the Nissan Frontier and the Toyota Tacoma are fully capable of these adventures, but when it comes to payload capacity for the off-roading trims, the 2022 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X beats out the 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD again. The PRO-4X Crew Cab has 1,230 lbs of payload, whereas the TRD Off-Road Double Cab 4x4 is only going to be able to carry 1,155 lbs of stuff up that mountain pass. So whether you are looking to work in the city or go over the river and through the woods, if you want to load up the bed of your truck to max capacity, the Frontier is going to be the best midsize pickup truck for you.

  • Power

Horsepower is very important to a truck owner. In fact, it really was trucks that were compared to horses back in the day, which is where the term horsepower originally came from. Engines were measured by the number of horses it would take to do roughly the same amount of work, and so the more horsepower an engine has, the more capable that engine is and, therefore, the more capable and powerful the vehicle will be.

    Get the Power You Need

The 2022 Nissan Frontier has a fantastic amount of horsepower for its class. In fact, its standard 310 hp 3.8L V6 engine is actually the best in class for midsize pickup trucks. The 2022 Toyota Tacoma also has a good amount of horsepower, coming in at 278 hp from a smaller 3.5L V6. Further, the Tacoma actually comes standard with a tiny 2.7L four-cylinder engine that only produces 159 hp! In order to get the most power possible, the 2022 Nissan Frontier is going to be the midsize pickup truck for you.

So what can you do with all that extra power? Really, that's up to you. But a few ideas include getting up to speed on your interstate on-ramp before you ever even hit the interstate, zipping around a slower vehicle that is inhibiting traffic, and pulling ahead of everybody else at a newly green light so that you can easily catch that turn you previously forgot about. Extra horsepower is not just a bragging right: it's also a potential safety concern as well, and when you drive a truck with extra horsepower, you're going to be driving a much safer vehicle.

  • Off-Roading

Many people buy midsize pickups as off-roading adventure vehicles because they are capable of completing said off-road adventures. Their compact size makes them more nimble on the trail, while the pickup truck design means they don't sacrifice cargo space. These trucks sure can carry a lot of gear in their beds, especially when you compare them to some of the other popular off-roading options. This being the case, some of the off-roading specifications in these midsize pickup trucks are worth noting.

    PRO-4X vs TRD Off-Road

The 2022 Nissan Frontier and the 2022 Toyota Tacoma both fit the bill of being powerful and capable off-road vehicle options. Each of these trucks has its own off-roading trims available and ready to go. The PRO-4X is the top off-roading package for the Nissan Frontier, and the TRD Off-Road is the best off-roading package for the Toyota Tacoma.

Ground clearance is something that every off-road adventurer knows is extremely important. Within reason, the more clearance you have, the larger the obstacles you can overcome. That's the general idea, at least (although it is a little more complex than that, and in the end, a better driver will overcome all else). So what is the clearance of the midsize pickup trucks at hand?

    Climb Over Obstacles

Both the 2022 Toyota Tacoma and the 2022 Nissan Frontier start at 9.4 inches of ground clearance. This is pretty good for a stock truck of this size. The part that is particularly interesting is that when you change the trim to the TRD Off-Road for the Toyota Tacoma, it still only has 9.4 inches of ground clearance, whereas the 2022 Nissan Frontier increases its ground clearance to 9.8 inches for the PRO-4X trim.

This may not seem like a significant amount of change, but you would think that if a vehicle was changed from a stock city truck to an off-roading adventure vehicle that the clearance would increase in order to make the vehicle more capable of making those rocky climbs. With that mindset, it stands to reason that the 2022 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X would be the more off-road capable midsize pickup truck, especially compared to the 2022 Toyota Tacoma, because the Nissan was able to increase the height of its vehicle just by changing up the trim.
