An armada is a large fleet of ships and seems a fitting name for the largest SUV in the Nissan lineup. Whether you are looking to move an entire fleet's worth of people or simply looking for a full-size SUV with plenty of room for your growing family, the 2023 Nissan Armada offers a large, safe, and luxurious way to get from point A to point B. The key to the Armada is that it provides a rugged exterior that is complimented by a roomy and comfortable interior. It is also tech-forward, featuring the latest innovations as part of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility platform.

The 2023 Nissan Armada is part of the second generation of this model, which began as part of the 2017 model year. Nissan first began offering the Armada in 2005, capturing the attention of drivers who needed a three-row full-size SUV that could seat up to eight passengers. The 2023 Armada has a base MSRP of $50,400, making it one of the more easily affordable luxury models in its vehicle class.[a] This is probably why the Armada won the Kelley Blue Book award for "Lowest 5-Year Cost to Own." You can choose from five different trim levels, starting with the S and SV models to the more luxurious SL and Platinum trims. There is also a Midnight Edition for folks who love the color black. No matter which model you choose, you are getting an SUV that is an incredible combination of performance, luxury, and safety.

  • Performance

The Standard 5.6L Endurance V8 Engine

Each 2023 Nissan Armada comes equipped with a standard 5.6-liter Endurance V8 gas engine. It has a dual overhead camshaft configuration with 32 valves feeding the engine's eight cylinders. This engine features Nissan's version of a variable valve timing system called Variable Valve Event and Lift technology. Simply put, this can sequentially shut down some of the valves at lower speeds to improve engine efficiency. Nissan has opted to use direct fuel injection on the Endurance engine, allowing it to deliver an impressive 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque.

Nissan has paired the Endurance V8 on the 2023 Armada with a 7-speed automatic transmission. This transmission features downshift rev-matching to improve performance. There is also a manual shift mode, so you can have greater control over the engine's performance without the hassle of working a clutch and stick shift.

    Rear and Four-Wheel Drive Options

The 2023 Armada comes with either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The four-wheel drive models feature a switch-operated 2-speed transfer case, allowing you to switch to rear-wheel drive on highway conditions to improve fuel economy. The front and rear feature independent double-wishbone suspension with stabilizer bars. The rear suspension has an auto-leveling feature to enhance passenger comfort.

The Armada also gives you 9.1 inches of ground clearance, which will help with clearing obstacles on and off the road. For a full-size SUV, the Armada can be surprisingly nimble. The Endurance V8 gives the Armada exceptional acceleration, allowing it to go from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.9 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph.

    Towing and Payload Capabilities

One of the most pleasantly surprising things about the 2023 Nissan Armada is its ability to provide a great deal of utility, something we don't see in many SUVs. Most manufacturers seem to emphasize the sport and forget all about the utility; this is not the case with Nissan. The Armada can tow up to 8,500 lbs, a staggering number for a vehicle outside of a pickup truck. In addition, it can carry up to 1,650 lbs of payload. As a result, you can also use your Armada to transport things for a home improvement project or to tow a boat or trailer for a fun family vacation.

    Fuel Economy

While the 2023 Nissan Armada will never be mistaken for an economical subcompact, it still delivers solid fuel economy for a vehicle of its size and utility. The Armada with standard rear-wheel drive will provide a respectable 16 MPG combined. If you opt for available four-wheel drive, the fuel economy will drop slightly to a still dependable 15 MPG combined highway and city driving.

  • Interior

    Seating Options and Features

The inside of the 2023 Nissan Armada is a large and luxurious space in which up to eight passengers can easily stretch out and enjoy the ride. The front row features a pair of bucket seats. These are heated on every trim level except for the base model Armada S. The top trim Platinum model also has a built-in cooling system for the front row seats. Nissan has made the heated steering wheel feature standard on all models of the 2023 Armada. Also, all driver's seats on the Armada are 10-way power-assisted, so you should have no trouble adjusting the seat position to that perfect position.

The rear seat is a split bench, with the third row a 60/40-split bench to make it easier to fold down for expanded cargo usage. The second-row bench seats in the Platinum trim are heated and can fold flat in every Armada model. The third-row bench on the Armada Platinum features a one-touch power-folding feature. Drivers who opt for the SL and Platinum can exchange the second-row bench seat for a pair of available captain's chairs with armrests. You should keep in mind that this will reduce the maximum seating capacity to seven passengers.

The Armada S utilizes cloth seating fabric, while the Armada SV features a Prima-Tex fabric on the seats. The Armada SL and Midnight Edition have leather seats, while the top Platinum trim has quilted leather appointments that look great and feel even better.

    Passenger Space

Nissan has done an exceptional job of apportioning the 157 cu.ft. of passenger space inside the Armada among the three rows of seats. For example, the front row passengers get 41.9 inches of legroom, the second row enjoys 41 inches, and the third row gets 28.4 inches. The tapered roof design on the Armada yields 36.4 inches of headroom in the third row, 40 inches in the second row, and 40.9 inches in the front row. If your Armada model features a moonroof, this will be 39.8 inches of headroom in the front.

    Cargo Space

The 2023 Nissan Armada provides a very spacious trunk that can be easily expanded to accommodate larger cargo and belongings. The trunk itself has 16.5 cu.ft. of space. This expands to 49.9 cu.ft. by folding down the third row of seats. If you need more space, simply fold down the second row to free up an amazing 92.6 cu.ft. of trunk space.

  • Technology

The black and white interior of a 2023 Nissan Armada shows the steering wheel and infotainment screen.

    Nissan Safety Shield 360

Nissan has given each model of the 2023 Armada its standard Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite of driver assistance technologies. These features will make operating your 2023 Nissan Armada safer and more convenient than ever before. Many of Nissan's competitors either don't offer all of these standard features or make you pay a premium to get them. If you are attempting to change lanes in busy traffic, the Blind Spot Warning will alert you to when it is safe to change lanes. Similarly, Lane Departure Warning will alert you if you begin to drift out of your lane in your Armada. Intelligent Lane Intervention will then use slight steering adjustments to get you safely back into your lane.

If the system detects that you are in danger of colliding with the vehicle in front of your Armada, the Automatic Emergency Braking w/ Pedestrian Detection system will alert you of a possible collision and apply the brakes if unavoidable to lessen the impact. There is also Pedestrian Detection, which operates in a similar fashion but has been designed to detect pedestrians that may be in the path of your Armada.

Parking your Armada should be easier than ever with standard front and rear parking sensors. In addition, the rear camera will help you see objects behind you while in reverse. To help with this feature, the 2023 Armada includes Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Automatic Braking. These will let you know if any vehicles or pedestrians are in your blind spot when you are in reverse and will engage the emergency brakes to avoid a collision.

When driving at night, one of the most frustrating things is to turn the high beams on and off. High Beam Assist takes care of this for you by turning the high beams on when you enter an area of low light and then turning them off when the lighting improves or when the system detects another motorist.

The 2023 Armada also has standard Intelligent Cruise Control. Just like regular cruise control, you can set a desired speed on the highway. However, unlike regular cruise control, Intelligent Cruise Control will slow down when it detects slower-moving traffic in front of you. As soon as the traffic picks up, it will return you to the desired speed you originally selected. This will improve safety while reducing wear and tear on your Armada's brakes.

    Infotainment

Each 2023 Nissan Armada comes with NissanConnect infotainment on a 12.3-inch color touchscreen, allowing you to connect your smartphones using Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay integration and the ability to stream your favorite apps and music. All the trims except the Armada S have Amazon Alexa Built-in, so you can bring your favorite virtual assistant anywhere you go. You can access all the features on the NissanConnect system using the touchscreen or the handy steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

The Armada is one of the few vehicles in its class to offer a built-in, door-to-door navigation system on all trim levels. This will make getting where you are going quicker and easier in your Armada. You also get a 3-month trial subscription to SiriusXM, which you can enjoy listening to on the Armada's audio system. The S has four speakers, while the SV and Midnight Edition feature a 6-speaker system, and the SL and Platinum come with a Bose audio system. This features 13 speakers with a subwoofer and a digital amplifier and is perfect for true audiophiles.
