Have you heard the news? An icon will return and has big plans to take American roads by storm with more power, improved performance, effortless handling, and a suite of cutting-edge technology that will keep you connected when you’re behind the wheel. Are you ready for the all-new 2023 Nissan Z?

Dropping the numerical prefix in its name for the first time in American history, the 2023 Nissan Z ushers the iconic sports car into its seventh generation and builds on the legacy of the Z-car that debuted in America in the 1960s, a time when Nissan was known as Datsun. Surprisingly, the Datsun 240Z wasn’t particularly exciting, at least not from the outside, and it shared similar features with many other sports cars. So, what was its secret? Datsun built the 240Z so well that it outperformed high-end sports cars from Porsche at a fraction of the cost. The 240Z set a new precedent for the entire segment, forcing automakers to raise their standards to deliver better speed demons.

The 2023 Nissan Z proudly continues this legacy and marks a significant shift in the Z-car’s history over the last five decades. After the 12-year run of the 370Z generation, Nissan has decided to redesign the speed demon and usher the Z-car to new heights of glory. That’s where we find the Z-car today with the stunning, powerful, and innovative 2023 Nissan Z that proves the legend has finally returned.

  • Performance

A blue 2023 Nissan Z is shown from the front speeding down an empty road.

The original 240Z put the excitement back into owning and driving a sports car, which is exactly what the 2023 Nissan Z is determined to continue. That excitement begins under the hood, where Nissan engineers worked tirelessly to make the 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine faster, more powerful, and more responsive. To do this, Nissan added small-diameter turbochargers and a turbo speed sensor to maximize and balance the engine’s power while the electronic variable valve timing system boosts response time and efficiency.

These modifications make the 2023 Z more powerful than its predecessor, the sixth-generation 370Z. The updated engine churns out 400 horsepower at 6,400 rpm, an increase of 68 horsepower. The turbos also bring 30 percent more torque to the tune of 350 lb-ft from 1,600 to 5,200 rpm. This boost in power also pushes the 2023 Z to a 3.5-second launch from 0 to 60 mph, which is seamless thanks to the advanced launch assist control system that holds the engine at its optimal rpm to eliminate wheel spin and ensure your launch is fast, consistent, and smooth time after time.

    Two Transmission Options

For sports car purists looking for a true connection with the Z, the available 6-speed manual transmission is a must-have and comes with an EXEDY high-performance clutch. Those who prefer an automatic transmission don’t have to worry about losing the thrill of driving a sports car with Nissan’s all-new, quick-response 9-speed gearbox. Offering a wider gear ratio, a standard launch control system, and aluminum paddle shifters, the automatic transmission also features two customizable drive modes (Standard and Sport) that let you finetune how the Z performs. While Standard mode is ideal for your daily commute, Sport mode unleashes the Z’s power and capability with faster acceleration, sharper steering, and sound enhancement that brings the roar of the 3.0-liter engine to life in the cabin.

    Superior Handling

The 2023 Z is undeniably powerful, but that begs the question, “How does it handle?” A sports car that doesn’t handle well at high speeds hasn’t earned its stripes in the segment. Fortunately, that isn’t the case for the 2023 Z, which is built on a stiffer chassis that offers the rigidity and stability you need when pushing the Z to its limits. Nissan also added monotube shock absorbers to the front and rear suspension for improved ride quality, performance, and stability. Stopping power is also impressive, with the 2023 Z boasting four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, which can be upgraded with four-piston calipers on Performance grade models.

  • Technology

When you get behind the wheel of a sports car like the 2023 Nissan Z, you deserve to have a cockpit that meets all your driving needs. To ensure this, Nissan teamed up with GT500 driver Tsugio Matsuda for advice. The motorsports legend inspired the 2023 Z’s cockpit design, specifically the instrumentation behind the steering wheel that gives drivers a clear view of vital data, including multi-color shift lights that warn you when you are approaching redline (a feature Matsuda insisted on).

The 12.3-inch digital instrument display is customizable with three unique display modes: Normal, Enhanced, and Sport. Normal mode offers a relaxed yet sporty design that puts navigation, audio settings, and vehicle data in the center. Enhanced mode extends the navigation map in the center of the screen by pushing the tachometer and speedometer to the edges, while Sport mode moves the tachometer and a shift-up light into your field of view.

    Infotainment Features

With the instrumentation display showcasing vital information at a quick glance, Nissan turned its attention to the Z’s connectivity, infotainment, and remote features. The 9.0-inch center touchscreen display, which is standard on the Z Performance, is a hub of technology and features smartphone integration, Door to Door Navigation, a WiFi hotspot, and NissanConnect. NissanConnect is an exclusive suite of services that keeps you connected to more than just the road. Through the display and the NissanConnect app for your smartphone, you have more control over the Z with the touch of a button or a simple voice command.

NissanConnect is home to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, which gives you access to your favorite apps and streaming services to ensure you never miss a beat from your busy life. The suite also equips the Z with added security and convenience features that engineer confidence when you’re on the road. Maintenance alerts keep you informed of the Z’s maintenance needs, while Emergency Call and Automatic Collision Notification are life-saving tools in an emergency. Both give you access to a Response Specialist who can alert emergency personnel of your location in tragic events where every second counts.

    Your Partner on the Road

The suite extends its functionality even further with voice recognition tools, Bluetooth capability, and a hands-free text messaging assistant, all of which ensure your focus stays on the road ahead. Door to Door Navigation is also an integral part of the suite and delivers turn-by-turn navigation via the most current map data available. You can tailor the map view to your preferences, whether that means using Street View or Satellite View.

  • Safety

Safety is a top priority for Nissan, especially in models like the 2023 Z, which pushes its limits in terms of speed, agility, performance, and handling. Luckily, the 2023 Z has the confidence to match its capability thanks to a suite of cutting-edge safety and driver-assist tools that actively enhance your view around the sports car and minimize the potential for collision. This makes getting behind the wheel of the 2023 Z all the more enjoyable.

    Driver-Assist Technology

Every Z comes standard with a RearView Monitor that gives you an expansive view behind the sports car and makes navigating into and out of congested areas easier. Nissan also equips the sedan with several enhanced tools like Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection that actively monitors the road ahead for traffic and pedestrians. The tool alerts you to slow down as needed for traffic and, if you fail to respond in time, will automatically engage the Z’s brakes to minimize the potential for collision or reduce the severity of impact. If it senses a pedestrian in your path, the Z’s automatic emergency brakes can bring the sports car to an immediate emergency stop.

Intelligent Forward Collision Warning builds on the functionality of Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection by looking two cars ahead at all times. When it detects traffic is slowing down, it notifies you to do the same; if you don’t, it activates automatic emergency braking. Rear Cross Traffic Alert works the same by monitoring the rear of the sports car, alerting you to vehicles crossing from either side of the Z. Finally, Blind Spot Warning keeps an eye on your blind spots for traffic, and Lane Departure Warning helps you keep the Z safely centered in its lane with subtle steering adjustments. Should you drift out of the lane, the tool uses a gentle buzz of the steering wheel to notify you to correct your course.

    Enhanced Visibility

With these tools serving as an extra set of eyes around the Z, you can focus on the road ahead. Your visibility is improved with the Z’s High Beam Assist automatic headlamps that automatically dim the high beams when they detect oncoming traffic. Once traffic has passed, they reactivate the high beams to ensure you have the best view at all times. Last but far from least, the 2023 Z comes standard with Intelligent Cruise Control that improves traditional cruise control by actively monitoring the flow of traffic and adjusting the Z’s cruising speed as needed. This eliminates the need to constantly set and reset your speed when traffic speeds up and slows down.
